The trail is 16km long and took about 2 hours to complete. For the most part, the trail follows the spectacular NoordKaap River which is crossed 4 times on this trail. It is suggested that a walk-through of every crossing be done before attempting to cross the river. The river crossings vary from are rocky to sandy. The third crossing can be a problem directly after heavy rains.
There are braai facilities at selected spots on the bank of the river. It is under huge Matumi trees. This is a truly beautiful natural area. There are no official ablution facilities.
The route is rated as a 3-4 using the grading system of 1 (easy) to 5 (extreme.) A part of the route can be rated as a 2, but you need low range 4x4 for most of the trail. At some areas you need to be careful not to damage the underneath of your vehicle whilst traversing rocky parts.
The route is well marked and the changes are slim that you will damage your vehicle. There is no cell phone coverage on this route.
This route is in a unique and beautiful environment with many photographic opportunities on the route. Animals such as bushbuck, kudu, wildebeest and impalas are common sightings. It is an ideal trail for a nice family outing!
The trail is 8km long and will take almost 2 hours to complete. The starting point at the lodge is at altitude 911m and the lookout point is at 1222m - a climb of 311m. On top of the mountain a huge rock serves as a lookout point and picnic spot. The owner of the farm allows fires at this dedicated area if you want to braai on top of the mountain. There are no formal ablution facilities.
For about 90% of the trail, we used low range and needed the diff lock at some places. The route is rated as a 3-4 using the rating system of 1 (easy) to 5 (extreme.) The route is well marked and the changes are slim that you will damage your vehicle. This route should not be attempted directly after heavy rains. There is no cell phone coverage on this route.
Whilst on the trail, we encounter birds such as the brown snake eagle. We also saw animals such as buffalo near the dam. This is a challenging fun ride but be ready - this trail is for the wild at heart. This trail is recommend as a fun family outing in a pristine environment!
Please remember: all the trails are marked and they are great fun - but be aware - this is a wilderness area and wild animals are dangerous.
Located in the heart of Mpumalanga and approximately 100km from the Kruger National Park, the lodge provides a perfect base for exploring the region's rich and diverse wildlife and natural beauty. The lodge itself is nestled in the mountains, providing stunning views of the surrounding landscape and offering guests a tranquil retreat. Tanda Kutula Mountain Lodge is the perfect base from which to explore Mpumalanga and the Kruger National Park.
See the free-roaming wild horses of Kaapse Hoop. Strictly speaking, they’re feral horses (i.e. horses whose ancestors were domesticated but who are now living in an untamed state) but ‘wild horses’ sounds much more romantic. No one seems sure anymore of their origin. Some stories tell of them being left behind after the gold mining days, or after the Anglo Boer War.
The Barberton Nature Reserve is one of the most accessible of the Mpumalanga nature reserves and has become a popular weekend destination for many day visitors from all around. The Reserve conserves a bushveld, savannah biome in scenic country just a short drive from both centres. The reserve is home to a variety of game, including kudu, mountain rhebuck, nyala, zebra, grey duiker, impala, wildebeest and the rare red duiker. Klipspringer also occurs on the numerous rocky outcrops.
The Noordkaap River, which runs through the reserve, provides an interesting focal point. A feature known as the Barberton Sea Dam on the river attracts many visitors. The Barberton Mountains are extremely rich in Plant species, more so than any other area of the province. Some of the species are solely restricted to this area such as the Protea Curvata. The vegetation belongs to the Sour Lowveld Bushveld of the Savanna Biome. This is mostly an open to closed tree savannah, with dense riverine fringes along drainage lines and open grassy areas on the northern ridge. The grass constituent is generally tall, tufted and relatively dense.

Gold panning may have its roots firmly in the past and can often be perceived to be dominantly in the long-gone era in our history but in South Africa, gold panning has however got both feet firmly in the future and has captured the imagination and interest of young and old.

A small ghost town, Eureka City was established in 1885, when gold was discovered on the Sheba Reef. It is located 20kms from Barberton. In 1886 the town had three shops, three hotels, a bakery, chemist, racecourse, music hall and bars to cater for the diggers in the area. All that remains now are the ruins of the buildings. In 1887 it had a population of 700 people. The tour is filled with fascinating examples and information of the rich history of this area.
